Learn To Fly

Let's discuss your objectives.

We will walk you through the process, answer any questions you have, and schedule a time to meet for your first lesson. We like to get started with a minimum amount of bureaucracy, but there are a few things you will need on the way to earning your certificate:

Time. . Intensive full-time programs can be completed in as few as two weeks, while a part-time student typically takes four to six months of flying several times a week.

Money. You do not need to pay for all your private pilot flight training up front. With Island Air you may pay as you go, or you may take advantage of our discounts if you pay for a block of lessons in advance.

Headset. Prices range from the low $90's up to several hundred dollars or more, depending on model and make. We have loaners available, but it's a good idea to get your own headset as soon as possible, preferably before you start training.

Language. All applicants for the private license must be able to read, speak, and understand English, which is the international language standard of aviation. Also, your radio calls must be made in English (internationally); therefore fluency in English will be required before you take your practical test and qualify for your pilot certificate.

Before you solo, you will need the following:

Medical examination. You must pass a basic medical exam, certifying that you meet the medical standards for safely operating an aircraft.

Age. You must be at least 16 years of age in order to fly solo with a student pilot certificate, and 17 years old to get a pilot's license. There is no upper age limit, provided that you are healthy enough to pass the basic medical exam discussed above.

Before you apply for your private pilot check ride you will need the following:

Pass the FAA Written Test. The airman knowledge test examines you on the concepts and information you learned in your ground school training. The exam is given at designated computer testing sites for a fee of $95. You will be asked to present proof that your instructor has approved your ground school training.

We appreciate your interest in our flight training and advanced flight and instrument training. You Come To Us or We Come To You, TRAINING IS WHAT WE DO. We expect to hear from you today.
